Duties and responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), which was founded in 1972, is the premier global environmental authority. It establishes the environmental agenda, encourages the UN system to implement the environmental component of sustainable development in a cogent manner, and acts as a credible global environmental advocate. The ambitious goal of UNEP's Medium-Term Strategy 2022–2025 is to better support Member States and partners in addressing the triple planetary crises of pollution, climate change, and depletion of natural resources by using data and digital advances. In order to become a more data-driven, flexible, transparent, and efficient organisation, UNEP plans to scan, test, and scale pertinent digital technologies.

UNEP is leveraging digital technologies to enhance agility, collaboration, and innovation in addressing climate, nature, and pollution challenges. This approach strengthens UNEP's capacity to engage with stakeholders and enhances accountability in development programs. The organization's digital transformation vision focuses on leveraging existing and future data and technologies to improve value delivery for its stakeholders.
