FULLY FUNDED : Apply for the 2024 Canon Foundation-Kyoto University Japan-Africa Exchange Program

Fellows in highly qualified disciplines of African Studies research are available through the Canon Foundation-Kyoto University Japan-Africa Exchange Programme.

Researchers from Kyoto University's partner institutions in Africa who wish to conduct research in Kyoto, as well as fellows from KU who wish to perform research in Africa, are the two main beneficiaries of this programme.

Scholarship Specifics:
The European branch of the Canon Foundation is a grant-making charity that works to advance scientific exchanges and global cultural exchanges between Europe and Japan. Canon Europa N.V., Canon's European Headquarters, founded it on December 22, 1987, in accordance with Dutch legislation. It is registered in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Although the Foundation operates independently both financially and legally, it collaborates closely with Canon Europa N.V., which supplied the first funding.

- The annual financial help awarded to successful candidates is prorated for different time periods and varies from 22,500 to 27,500 euros. Each successful applicant will get notification of the specific payment procedure from CFE, which will handle the payments directly.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible, candidates must have an MA, work at KU or one of its partner universities, and provide reference letters from Kyoto University as well as documentation of their relationships' current state.

Application Procedure
The deadline for applications is November 15th, 2023. Consideration of the applications takes place first at KU and then at CFE. The Selection Committee of CFE will make final decisions and email the results to applicants before the end of March of that year. Therefore, the earliest possible date to begin the fellowship is April 1 of the same year. Please submit the following documents to Kyoto University Africa Unit (africaunit@kura.kyoto-u.ac.jp):

Your research plan including a clear title at the top of the page as well as starting/ending dates of the proposed research. The research plan needs to include a general cost estimate, including living, travel, research costs, insurance, and etc. (maximum 2 pages)
2 reference letters (maximum 1 page each) from 2 persons. One letter should be from someone in a position to comment on your academic qualifications and professional work while the other should be a confirmation letter from your prospective host who can provide research or work facilities to you during the proposed period.
Your Curriculum Vitae
1 copy of your doctoral certificate or your highest academic degree
1 passport size photograph of yourself
1 list of your academic publications or professional achievements in chronological order containing information on all authors, place and year of publication and page references.
