GRANT : Apply for the Michael Jacobs Travel Chronicle Grant 2024

Applications are open for the Michael Jacobs Travel Chronicle Grant 2024.

The fellowship, which is in its tenth iteration and aims to promote travelogues, will grant US$10,000 for a book project or travel essay about Spain or Latin America that will be published in either Spanish or English.

The winner will be selected by the panel, which this year includes two new members, based on the projects' journalistic depth and narrative quality. Michael Jacobs believes that travel journalism transcends the mere anecdotal experience, which is why he seeks out publications that can arouse the reader's senses and expand their perspective.

During the Hay Festival Cartagena de Indias 2024, which runs from January 25 to 28, the winner will be formally announced.

About the fellowship

The Michael Jacobs Travel Writing Grant was established by the Gabo Foundation and Hay Festival Cartagena de Indias in the wake of Michael Jacobs's passing in 2014. A new edition of the call for entries has been released this year to mark the tenth anniversary of the English writer's death. It is sponsored by the Michael Jacobs Foundation for Travel Writing, a non-profit established by Michael's brother and widow to promote travel writing in Latin America and Spain and to honour Michael's legacy.

About the Grant

A reward of $10,000 is allocated as encouragement to support the research and writing of the recipient's article or book, encompassing taxes for both the beneficiary and sponsoring institutions. The grant will be disbursed in two installments: the initial $5,000 upon the announcement of the winner and the remaining $5,000 upon completion and submission of the project for publication. Additionally, the awardee will be invited to serve as a judge for the subsequent Michael Jacobs Travel Writing Grant edition.

Don't miss out on the application deadline which is 15th December, 2023, at 11:59 p.m. (Colombian time).
