Applications are open for the 2024 BIGSAS Awards Full Scholarships.
Through the Bayreuth International Graduate School of African Studies (BIGSAS), the University of Bayreuth provides an innovative and well-structured doctoral programme for anyone interested in obtaining a doctorate in African Studies. You will find all the information you need about the programme in this article, including details on its academic components, the application procedure, and its range of support services.
The two PhD programmes offered by BIGSAS, Dr. Phil and Dr. Rer Nat, are mostly offered in English and French. Over the course of seven semesters, the part-time programme enables students to manage their career and academic obligations. The programme must be completed in three to four years, starting at any time. Academic activities, colloquia, and disciplinary and interdisciplinary courses are all part of it.
There are no combined Master's and PhD programmes, nor are there any tuition fees for the doctoral programme. Programmes for joint degrees and double degrees are also offered.
Academic activities, colloquia, and disciplinary and multidisciplinary courses are all part of BIGSAS's structured PhD programme. Both students and junior fellows are encouraged to actively participate and contribute under this system. With the exception of extraordinary events like semester breaks, field research, or conference participation, students are required to be in Bayreuth all year long.
